Abstract

The speculative promise of the new aesthetic is the title of an article by Luke Turner in the blog Notes on Metamodernism (2012). Turner is the author of the manifesto of metamodernism, an aesthetic current that gathers the structure of feeling beyond postmodernism, and that tries to understand, assimilate and describe the aesthetic oscillations of artistic practice and visual culture today. Around this current, the possibility of a new order of things in contemporary culture is manifesting itself, in a necessary way, and, extending its tentacles further, in our society. Thus, at a time of open speculative horizons, a philosophy, Graham Harman's speculative realism - OOO (object-oriented ontology), endorses the possibility of conceiving reality and, with it, causality from new points of view, without precedents. Abandon the Anthropocene and begin to listen to other forms of intelligence: artificial intelligence, or open the possibility of listening to the intelligence of nature: primates, cephalopods, trees, stones, wood... To illustrate these ontological changes at an artistic level, we will propose the study of the case of James Bridle as a representative of The New Aesthetic. A label that recapitulates the visual imaginary where the superhybridization of the collective imaginary is interrelated in the digital age. And on the other hand, we will approach the musical work of Holy Herndon, a sound researcher who, through electronics, explores and assimilates the new artistic trends related to artificial intelligence. Spawn, an intelligent recording system created from machine learning, generates data sets through which the soundtrack is generated. Both artists had a fruitful talk in Berlin in the summer of 2019 about Artificial Intelligence (AI), the nature of intelligence and its implications with evolution, culture and the control of power.

Impact and social visibility

From the perspective of influence or social adoption, and based on metrics associated with mentions and interactions provided by agencies specializing in calculating the so-called "Alternative or Social Metrics," we can highlight as of 2026-04-03:

  • The use of this contribution in bookmarks, code forks, additions to favorite lists for recurrent reading, as well as general views, indicates that someone is using the publication as a basis for their current work. This may be a notable indicator of future more formal and academic citations. This claim is supported by the result of the "Capture" indicator, which yields a total of: 1 (PlumX).

It is essential to present evidence supporting full alignment with institutional principles and guidelines on Open Science and the Conservation and Dissemination of Intellectual Heritage. A clear example of this is:

  • The work has been submitted to a journal whose editorial policy allows open Open Access publication.
