THE PLURICENTRISM OF CATALAN IN THE MAIN AUTOMATIC SPELL-CHECKERS AND TRANSLATION TOOLS

Abstract

Automatic spell-checkers and translation tools provide an excellent support for language use in the digital world at a time when written communication channels prevail. For pluricentric and minority languages such as Catalan, the way in which spelling and grammar tools handle the linguistic variation permitted by linguistic standards (the distinct variants represented by the three main parastandards of Catalan) can have a decisive impact on the perceived unity of the language and how secure its speakers feel in its usage, particularly those with little understanding of language issues. The present study analyses the aforementioned handling of linguistic variation, taking into account (1) the way programmes choose to present Catalan (from amongst the language options available) and (2) the effective management of linguistic variants, which can range from just one (an option more restrictive than the legislation) to a reflection of the same polymorphism that the Institute of Catalan Studies (IEC) or the Valencian Academy of Language (AVL) may organise in terms of parastandards, with highly varied results.
