Abstract

Carlos Fern & aacute;ndez Casado, known mainly for his bridge projects, was a humanist engineer who expanded his training with studies in Philosophy and Aesthetics. One of the pioneers in the use of reinforced concrete, he was the person who introduced the Cross method in Spain, what made easier the calculation of hyperstatic structures. Among these it is highlighted the Vierendeel typology, presented at the end of the 19(th) century by Arthur Vierendeel. In this text, a brief review about the different calculation methods that existed prior to Hardy Cross's formulation for its global analysis is made. Then, it's analyzed the innovative contributions made by the engineer from La Rioja and the practical application of the Vierendeel beams in of the assembly workshops of the National Institute of Aeronautical Technology (INTA) in Torrej & oacute;n de Ardoz.
