Abstract

The cinema of the so-called classic Hollywood not only has an unprecedented cinematographic heritage, with films that are difficult to forget and many of them capable of marking our lives, but in its golden years the precursors of that cinema built a vast and extensive set of buildings that shaped dreams in the form of films. These constructions are the sets where the stories harvested from the feelings of the screenwriters were shot and were reused over and over again until they were worn out and exhausted, despite their continuous rehabilitation. Those permanent (and ephemeral) architectures, sometimes incomplete, made up a different, unique architectural heritage; scorned and undervalued during the years they were still standing. In this text we value and study the beginnings, the creative process, the construction, and the decline in solitude of that architectural (and cinematographic) heritage, of those architectures where the permanent and ephemeral concepts were confused, and which developed the Hollywood film industry in its magical years. © 2020, The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
