Explicitation analysed through the use of contrastive and consecutive connectors in a corpus of French-Spanish literary translations

Abstract

In this study we intend to compare, firstly, the existence of a greater or lesser use of connectives in a literary corpus translated into Spanish and a corpus originally written in Spanish. Secondly, we analyze the basis of the possible differences found in terms of the discursive semantic relationship shown by the connectives, not forgetting if they respond to the technique that in translation is called explicitation. For this purpose we have focused on two types of key connectives, as they convey fundamental semantic relationships in human communication: connectives of a contrastive nature and those of a consecutive nature. This work is part of one of the lines of research of group COVALT (Valencian Corpus of Translated Literature) that was started with a comparative study of the same connectives in a subcorpus of translations from English into Catalan compared to an analogous corpus of originals in Catalan (Marco, 2018).
